(...) There is no country in the world that hasn't circulated at least one stamp with cartographic content. The most common cases of maps shown on stamps include historical maps, modern maps of a country or part of it, images of continents and the globe. Usually the map itself is not the main thematic subject of the stamp but it contributes to the highlight of its design. As a result, maps drawn on stamps are mostly outlines and rarely maps in a real cartographic sense. But even these simple maps are correlated to historical facts and persons tightly connected to the history and life of nations. The letters through the postal services travel all over the world carrying the stamps which sometimes represent homeland, sometimes dreams, sometimes pride and oftentimes tears. About 50 Greek and 30 Cyprian stamps with map images have been printed since nowadays. Some of them are small masterpieces of high aesthetic value and high philatelic and historical interest. (...) Cyprus Philately: Cyprus prides itself on a very interesting philatelic history which can be traced as far back as 1343, with the first known letter sent from Ammochostos to Constantinople.
