"Some
travellers journeyed to Bellapais Abbey from Nicosia (Lefkosa)."
In 1683 Cornelis de Bruyn, 1652 - 1726/27, (sometimes quoted by George Jeffery and Harvey Ayerst as 'Cornelius van Bruyn' which seems wrong to me - Hans Doeleman) stopped at St. Chrysostomos monastery to the south of the Kyrenia range before scaling the ruins of Buffavento, and then following the mountain ridge to the west, descending eventually to the abbey set amongst the citrus groves. (more) Richard Pococke (1704-1765) also approached Bellapais Abbey from Nicosia (1738). Like De Bruyn, he visited 'the rich convent of Chrysostom' on the way. (more) close window | next picture
