NOTE TO THE PANORAMIC MAP (Bill Dreghorn) This is a copy of a map by a Venetian who in 1571 witnessed the siege of the city. The map shows the location of the Ottoman Turkish army with their tents and guns, and the position of the Venetian cannon on the city walls and towers. It shows the battle in progress, the ships locked up in the harbour by the iron chain, and Ottoman Turkish troop barges coming in to land. When you visit Famagusta today, all the fortifications shown on this map can be seen, even the cannon on Djamboulat bastion, which is now (a great!) town museum. |
