KANTARA
CASTLE - There are two south eastern towers, the lower one
(picture) being Byzantine and the upper Mediaeval. In general, the
Mediaeval castles were much bigger because they were used as administrative
centres: a place where taxes were collected and garrison foot-soldiers
did their training. In contrast the Byzantine castles were probably
only used as ternporary places of refuge, the normal use being that
of a watch tower.
