KANTARA CASTLE

THE EMBATTLEMENTS

If you build a wall in your garden it is very necessary to put coping stones on the top, otherwise the wall will soon crumble away under the normal processes of weathering.

The same applies to castle building for the embattlements had to be well protected, since that was the most vulnerable part of the castle.

When the castle of Kantara became a ruin in the 16th century the coping stones were already in a bad state of repair as a result of attacks by the trébuchet.

So now the embattlements look like decayed teeth, hence the term, "carious weathering."
