This
page is meant to honour the late Dr. William Dreghorn, whose words about
his beloved Cyprus are quoted in many places in this web site.
In Karaoglanoglu*, at your left hand on the road from Girne to
Lapta, you'll find the Pegasos Restaurant and Pub, frequented by many
British residents in Northern Cyprus.
There I found the written last words of "Bill" Dreghorn (picture
right) pinned on the wall. This original (see below)
deserves an even better place than Pegasos - may I most modestly suggest
the "William
('Bill') Dreghorn exhibition hall"?
This chamber in the Kyrenia Castle dates back to the Lusignan period (1191-1489),
and today it is named after William Dreghorn (1908 - † 2001), whose love
for Cyprus is known all over the world.
He has donated much to the cultural life in North Cyprus, including his
beautiful pictures of Girne, Famagusta, Nicosia and other places, both
past and present.
* Karaoglanoglu (Greek: St. George):
This village is named after the Turkish Colonel Karaoglanoglu, who
was killed by a mortar shell during the Turkish assistance given to the
beleaguered Cypriot Turks (July 20, 1974).
