Although these rooms are labelled "Barrack" by the Northern
Cyprus authorities, after
carefully (re)reading Enlart's description (page 433, second edition of "Gothic
Art and the
Renaissance in Cyprus" I doubt if this is right. Enlart: (...) To the south
this corridor comes
out into the basecourt, the exit being protected by a sort of barbican or rectangular
tower
which clings to the steep rock and is commanded from above by the upper defences;
to the
north it ends at the foot of the ramp leading to the upper plateau. (...) So
far no confusion,
but Camille Enlart then goes on: (...) At the foot of this ramp there are
some store-rooms,
partly underground, roofed with pointed barrel vaults and, further to the north,
a large open
cistern etc. (...) Barracks are not mentioned by Enlart! (I'll check this when
I am in St. Hilarion
Castle again - Hans Doeleman).
