The Northern Enclosure of Cairo's Citadel is surrounded by the Citadel's original Ayyubid walls and towers.
At the corner of the southern walls is Salah ad-Din's BURG AL-MUBALLAT (Paved Tower) built nine
meters above ground level.
* Across Salah Salim Street, you can see the domed CISTERN OF YA'QUB SHAH AL-MIHMANDAR (1495),
built during the reign of the Circassian sultan, Qaytbay, in celebration of an ephemeral Mamluk victory over
the Ottomans. Further in the distance, is a causeway leading to the FORT OF MUHAMMAD 'ALI on top of
the Muqattam hills. The fort was constructed in 1810 to defend the heights overlooking the Citadel. From
this spot you can also see where the Citadel hill was artificially detached from the rest of the Muqattam range.
* The walls of the Northern Enclosure turn north after the Burg al-Muballat.
* All of the eastern walls of the Northern Enclosure were built by Salah ad-Din.
