1010: The Mosque al-Hakim is a congregational mosque built for the eccentric Fatimid Caliph al-Hakim, author of strange
edicts. He forbade the manufacture of women's shoes and had himself proclaimed devine... He disappreared mysteriously
one night in the Moqatam hills, whence he is supposed by the Druzes to return as a saviour. The mosque was badly
battered by the earthquake of 1302, fell into ruin and was variously used as a stable, barracks and school, but was
beautyfully restored.
