Egypt, Cairo, Old city, Mosque al-Salih Ayyub

1260: Ayyubid Period (the dynasty of Saladin, who became sultan in 1186).
The madrasa (theological college) and tomb of Negm-al-Din al-Salih Ayyub, effectually the last descendant
of Saladin to rule Egypt, was built for him by his wife, the famous shagaret al-Durr (Tree of Pearls). It is the
first example of the subsequently much-repeated combination of college and mausoleum. Little remains but
the fine entrance facade, surmounted by a typical 13th century pepper-pot minaret and the domed tomb chamber.
