THE CHURCHES OF CRUSADER ACRE
(February 2005)
Although some 71 churches and religious houses are documented in Acre
from the time of the Crusader Kingdom, remains of barely half a dozen
survive. None the less, a wealth of documentary and cartographic evidence
from the medieval period and maps and travellers' accounts from the
late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, before the great rebuilding
under Fakh al-Din and Dahir al-'Umar, allow us to predict with some
degree of certainty where remains of particular structures ought to
have been. This evidence is currently being brought together in volume
4 of The Churches of the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem - to be published
by Cambridge University Press.
