ACRE (ACCO)

The El Jazzar mosque graces Acre’s skyline with its green dome and minaret.

Symbolism: the minaret, here seen from inside the old Crusaders castle, towers
high above the past.

THE CHURCHES OF CRUSADER ACRE
(February 2005)
Although some 71 churches and religious houses are documented in Acre from the time of the Crusader Kingdom, remains of barely half a dozen survive. None the less, a wealth of documentary and cartographic evidence from the medieval period and maps and travellers' accounts from the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, before the great rebuilding under Fakh al-Din and Dahir al-'Umar, allow us to predict with some degree of certainty where remains of particular structures ought to have been. This evidence is currently being brought together in volume 4 of The Churches of the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem - to be published by Cambridge University Press.
